ADJECTIVES and CHECKLISTS:
We played a game using adjectives to describe secret items and we focused on showing, not telling sentences. We looked at sentences that tell and worked on making them sentences that show. Showing instead of telling is a great way to enhance stories.

Writing Camp Day 2
Today we looked at story starters. Starting stories that hook readers is difficult for all writers. We looked at some of Kevin Henkes, Joanne Ryder, Donald Crews, and Ezra Keats work. After picking a lead sentence students created their own stories and then compared them with the work of famous authors.

Writing Camp
We had a great time at writing camp today! We set up our writing notebooks and brainstormed starting ideas (Authority List, Heart Map, Ideas for Writing, Treasure Map, Memory Hand).
Tomorrow we will look at how our favorite authors start their stories. Remind your child to bring a couple of their favorite books to share as we look at how to start great beginnings.

Seeing changes outside, but wonder what is happening inside the walls? Lots! Mark Lekar, Marc Debrick, and others will be conducting tours to members and school parents interested in seeing the progress inside the school’s construction zone.
The tours will take place this Sunday, April 27 from 10:30 – 12:30 pm The building will be open during those times and we will ask entry into the new buildings to be through the school hallway doors adjacent to the kitchen and Miss Limback’s room (inside the main school building). Please, no access by crossing any fence lines (too many obstacles and possibly mud if you cross a fence). You will be free to roam once inside and several folks will be present to answer questions. Please be cognizant that this is a construction site and all smaller children must be kept in check to avoid any possible injuries – we want all to visit and enjoy the excitement but caution that all must be careful while the site is open.

Reflecting on our Week: Students used an app called Audio Memo to record themselves reading a leveled passage. Then they listened to their recording and made note of words they did not get correct. They repeated this process 2 times. By the third recording the students were able to figure out all of their mistakes. This process also allows them to hear how they sound while reading. By the third recording students said they sounded more like they do during conversations. This is a goal of fluency instruction. Students should sound like they talk when they are reading.
Some students have been confused about what an index is and how it is used. This week during centers students used the index in the back of the teachers science book to become more familiar with the index.
During guided reading students were able to bring their choice of books to discuss. We focused on character analysis and retell. Students interest level in books can be a big motivator for reading, even texts that might be considered too difficult. We had a great time discussing all of the books and learning new vocabulary.
