Reflecting on our week:
Today we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We talked about plantations, civil rights, and quilting. We read Stitchin' and Pullin', by Patricia McKissack.  Stitchin' and Pullin' is a book about a rural community in Alabama called Gee's Bend. It is a story of how slaves became landowners. The women of Gee's Bend passed down the art of quilting from generation to generation. Eventually Sears ordered quilts and pulled the community out of poverty.
After our story we had the privilege of listening to a family friend of Charlie Masa's, Sara Ruprecht. Sara brought in many quilt samples to show the children and we compared old quilting tools to the tools used today. Students had the opportunity to make their own square. We are making a friendship quilt out of the squares that will be put in the school auction!

We had many different centers to help learn and experience fabric and quilting techniques.
We had a search and find center. The students were given a sheet of many different types of designs that were used in the underground railroad; they had to see how many of them they could find on our display wall.
Students were able to piece a pinwheel quilt together.

We got to practice sewing on a sewing machine.

We looked closely at an ISPY quilt.
We picked out colors for our square...

and we decided how we wanted them to go together.
